Brushtail Possum Information
The brush tail possum is probably the family Phalangeridae being the regular variety of the possum present in New Zealand. It is the species known as Trichosurus Vulpecula. These imported pests from Australia came into the continent in the mid 1800's like a meal source and as being a product for trapping and skinning for the pelt. The possum can be a marsupial animal, called because after birth the young are carried in a pouch on the mothers belly. The color variations are wide and cover anything from grey to nearly black. The belly fur shaded from your grey-white to black-brown color. It can live anywhere and customarily do, the first possums started in the South Island and inside the past 150 years have spread through out New Zealand. Their preferred food are plants leaving, specially the broad leaves from the metrosideros and rata vines but including many native trees and shrubs. They will take in the flowers, bark, and ferns, ending with all the death in the plant or tree. They will also eat carrion, eggs, insects' cicadas and weta's. The weight range with the possum 2.5kgs to 6kgs. The density of possums a single area is will be as high as 10 to some hectare of land. The possum can be a nocturnal animal and it is able to moving 1 km up to 2.5 km per night. Possums seen inside daytime hours are usually in ill health. They communicate by scents or vocally, your pet features a wide array of sounds or noises. They climb inside their mothers pouch and lock on with a teat for that next 70 days. Some could have a second breeding season August to babies start growing their coats when they're 90 -100 days old. Their eyes open ten days later. They finally emerge from their mothers pouch from about 4 months of aging most by 6 months. They may always suckle until aged 8 months. index are high around 90 percent but sometimes vary naturally. They are vunerable to mites, tapeworm, Leptospirosis and Tuberculosis both of which could affect both stock and individuals.
